RENAISSANCE REFLECTIONS

Essays in memory of C.A. Mayer

PEACH TREVOR

Dedicated to the memory of an outstanding seiziémiste, C.A. Mayer, this volume is as much a celebration as a commemoration of his achievements. The essays reflect the multiple facets of the French Renaissance : its poetry, music, painting, piety, politics, cultural exchanges, comic theatre and satire are all illuminated here. Naturally enough, given Professor Mayer`s life`s work devoted to his critical edition of the poetry of Clément Marot, it is on this poet, his milieu and his legacy, that the spotlight shines longest. The Pléiade is represented by studies of Rémy Belleau`s biblical epyllion and by J.-A. de Baif`s work as translator in his L`Eunuque. Cultural exchanges are reflected in a correction to Machiavelli`s reception in France and by Montaigne`s visions of Rome, while the Cymbalum Mundi, the Satyre Ménippée and the dramatic monologues of Bruscambille provide a focus on satire. A fitting tribute and, it is hoped, a stimulus for further Renaissance reflections.
