The Histoire générale de la danse (1723) was considered to be a natural sequel to the earlier treatise, and in fact the same anecdotal method is adopted. Besides the historical survey of dance and the position it occupied in former societies, a detailed description is given of life at the court of Louis XIV, and the various forms of dancing in vogue: ballet, masked balls, tight-rope dancers etc.
