This study aims to show that writers such as Dickens, Dostoyevsky, Melville, Conrad, Proust and Kafka (and later Beckett), in spite of their many differences, practice a form of writing that struggles with literature, and that can be said to unite the modern novel around the notion of "the unnamable".
