Between 1841 and 1854, Lamartine sent more than 200 letters to his niece, Valentine, most of which were hitherto unpublished or published in a truncated form. They reveal a depth of feeling that goes beyond what usually binds an uncle to his niece, and that has led to all manners of speculation among biographers.
