The Apophtegmatum opus, a collection of 3000 apophtegms, is Erasmus’s last and least-studied work, but also one of his foremost. Shamelessly pillaged by Lycosthenes, it was seamlessly merged into the Polyanthea, the famed encyclopedia in which 17th-century European intellectuals found an education.
