The “romanticism” of Ernest Renan’s religion of science separates him from a positivist like Auguste Comte or an agnostic pragmatist like Marcelin Berthelot: the “ideal” he called for was a “synthesis” of science and religion. This may have led him to a form of skepticism, which this study aims to characterize.
