The Western version of the Oriental tale was born sometime between Galland’s translation of the Arabian Nights and Voltaire’s publication of The White Bull. Some of these tales aimed to popularize knowledge about the East; others to satirize French mores and institutions; while Voltaire’s philosophical tale combined both strains.
