French playwright Pierre-Claude Nivelle de La Chaussée (1692-1754) is mostly remembered as the father of the so-called “lachrymose” comedy, in large part because of a 19th-century thesis by Gustave Lanson. This is an attempt to rehabilitate his work, which was far more multifaceted and original than Lanson intimated.
