Sembène Ousmane (b. 1923), a major Senegalese filmmaker, is also a novelist. Les bouts de bois de Dieu, his masterpiece, traces the historic railway workers’ strike on the Dakar-Niger line (1947-1948), capturing the most endearing figures on the colonized side as well as public opinion’s shift after World War II.
